Historia firmy sięga roku 1947 i zaczyna się skromnym warsztatem otworzonym przez rodzinę Salomonów w Annecy we Francji. Początkowo warsztat produkuje raczej niewielkie ilości desek do nart, jednak wynalezienie przez Georga Salomona specjalistycznej maszyny (w 1952 roku) znacznie zwiększa produkcję.
Kolejne lata dostarczają następnych patentów, jednak dotyczą one już budowy nart, a dokładnie wiązań.

Jednak sporty zimowe to nie jedyne pole działań firmy, w 1992 Salomon wypuszcza na rynek solidne obuwie przeznaczone do wędrówek.

Firma nie przestaje wprowadzać nowych rozwiązań - w 1995 roku na rynku pojawiają się narty Prolink z zewnętrzym systemem pochałania drgań.

Po dwóch latach Salomon zostaje wykupiony przez Adidasa oraz przekształaca się tym samym w Adidas-Salomon SA. Nie ma to jednak dużego wpływu na dotychczasowy kierunek rozwoju firmy.
